Do our sleeping patterns with a significant other offer a window into the relationship as a whole? This is indeed true according to a recent study published by psychologists who took the trouble to observe the sleep positions of romantic partners. In fact, each position was attributed an entirely unique meaning. Interpreting these physical indicators has led some to draw some very unique conclusions.
the study of subconscious cues has been in existence for centuries. Modern psychology places a great deal of emphasis upon our body language, as it is thought to display many thoughts which may not be conscious. While words can deceive, our subconscious often represents what we truly think, feel and believe. In turn, scholars began to study our facial expressions; an unequivocal index of sincerity.
Placed under the eyes of science, movements, attitudes and postures provide the exact illustration of what we are thinking. In other words, they are the indicators of emotions that words may sometimes be hidden deep inside. Let's take a quick look at some sleeping positions which psychologists observed with some equally surprising results.
When a couple sleeps opposite one another and yet still maintains a contact point such as the foot or the hand, this signifies that they desire to have a degree of autonomy while still wishing to be in a good relationship. While mutual touch is a sign of communion and physical empathy, distance illustrates that each wishes to enjoy their own freedom and living space. Thus, this can be interpreted as an independent situation which still signifies that each wishes to coexist with the other.

In other words, they are the indicators of emotions that words may sometimes be hidden deep inside. Let's take a quick look at some sleeping positions which psychologists observed with some equally surprising results.
1 - Detached But In Contact
When a couple sleeps opposite one another and yet still maintains a contact point such as the foot or the hand, this signifies that they desire to have a degree of autonomy while still wishing to be in a good relationship. While mutual touch is a sign of communion and physical empathy, distance illustrates that each wishes to enjoy their own freedom and living space.1 - Detached But In ContactWhen a couple sleeps opposite one another and yet still maintains a contact point such as the foot or the hand, this signifies that they desire to have a degree of autonomy while still wishing to be in a good relationship. Thus, this can be interpreted as an independent situation which still signifies that each wishes to coexist with the other.
2 - The Mutual Embrace
This is the classic position which is often displayed in films and dramatic depictions. The female places her head upon the shoulder of her companion and in turn, he surrounds it with a warm and protective embrace. It does not take the skills of a psychologist to interpret the meaning of this position. In fact, some will consider this to be the "classic" embrace of an enamoured couple. The male will take on a protective attitude; providing warmth, comfort and love. In turn, the woman will nestle underneath this welcoming gesture. She does this due to the fact that she seeks warmth and emotional affection. This sensual and tender pose indicates a strong relationship which can be defined by a mutual affinity and empathy for one another.
3 - The Spoon
In this scenario, the couple is positioned much like two spoons within a drawer. This is also an extremely common situation. The back of one is flanked by the chest of the other and once again, the conclusion is rather clear. The outsider takes on the role of providing security; as if a shield has been made from his or her own body. The one who is within this embrace is likely to be the partner who is the most fragile and requires attention. As both are in a type of foetal position, they appear to be trying to comfort one another. This is often seen in younger couples who are still discovering the world. While both are full of hopes and expectations, there is still a certain amount of trepidation in regards to the future.
4 - A Single Point of Contact
There are times when each will sleep upon their back with a single point of contact such as a hand or a foot touching the body of the other partner. This is interpreted as a relationship which is built upon the concept of independence. Opinions, life views and priorities may not always be shared. Thus, individuality takes precedence over communion. However, this may not signify that there is a lack of commitment or affection within the relationship. In fact, this is confirmed by the focal point of contact. Still, there are likely to be unresolved conflicts that have not yet found a mutual understanding.
5 - Backs Facing One Another and No Contact
At first glance, this may very well appear to be the worst sleeping position for a couple. After all, there is no physical touch, no eye contact and it first seems that the couple has little in common. However, this interpretation may be wrong. This position does not necessarily serve to negate the emotions between two partners. Rather, it signifies that each is claiming his or her own space. This is a powerful statement of individuality. Their interests are likely to be at odds as well as their views of the meaning of life and how each will interpret similar events. However, it is also seen that this sleeping arrangement displays that each has found the uniqueness of the other partner and his or her ideas.
After reading these observations, some of us may desire to place a camera into our own bedrooms and see how we behave when asleep. Are we an independent couple or do we seek the warmth, comfort and affection of our partner? While these psychological studies are indeed interesting, perhaps the most expert advice still comes from what is whispered within our very own hearts.
Hey – great blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a really nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my blogs but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
